Siem de Jong turns jeers into cheers in four minutes
It is 20 months since Siem de Jong scored his one and only league goal for Newcastle, that coming in April 2015 when United lost 3-2 at home to Swansea.
Six months into his loan spell at PSV, the midfielder has scored his first league goal for the Dutch club.
Kicking off a couple of hours after Newcastle finished off an excellent 4-0 win over Birmingham, PSV were hosting bottom club Go Ahead Eagles.
After goalless draws with Rostov (Champions League) and Roda (second bottom of the Eredivisie), the fans were restless, as despite dominating Saturday night’s match PSV couldn’t find a goal yet again.
With 64 minutes on the clock Phillip Cocu decided to replace six goal striker Gaston Pereiro with the Newcastle loan player and the fans showed their displeasure, jeering the decision.
Coming on to play alongside brother Luuk, it only took Siem de Jong four minutes to score his first league goal in 20 months, scoring from close range after a low cross.
PSV saw the game out with Siem de Jong the match winner in a 1-0 win.
That moved PSV to within three points of Feyenoord and Ajax who are level on points, both having now played a game less than de Jong’s loan club.
