Sam Hutchinson claims that Newcastle United have a better squad than they had last season in the Premier League.

The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder thinks that he and his teammates face their biggest challenge of the season so far, playing top of the table Newcastle ‘in their backyard’.

Third top in the recent form table (13 points from 18, one more than Newcastle), Sam Hutchinson thinks though that Wednesday ‘can beat any team in this league’.

Newcastle are top of the table at Christmas but with five defeats in the 22 matches so far, it is a reminder for everybody at St James Park that they have to be fully focused to win any game in this division.

Losses to relegation strugglers Blackburn and Nottingham Forest sum up that any team can beat another on the day, with Rafa Benitez having an extra challenge on Monday now it has bee confirmed Jonjo Shelvey will serve his five match ban.

Boxing Day night under the floodlights with a sold out expectant crowd – what more could anybody want for Christmas?

Sam Hutchinson:

“It is probably the biggest challenge we’ve faced all season….Newcastle in their backyard and they are top of the league.

“But we concentrate on ourselves. That is what we do with every team. If we are ourselves and play well, we can beat any team in this league.

“We are never going to give up and try and go as hard as possible.

“If you look now, Newcastle have got a much stronger squad than they had last year.

But we’re stronger as well. In the last few months, we have got the results, and it is a results business.

“We are learning how to grind out performances, and we want to keep improving.”
