Rafa Benitez Wigan press conference: ‘If Dwight continues to score every game I’ll be happy’

The Rafa Benitez Wigan press conference has taken place on Tuesday lunchtime.

The United boss understandably happy after the four goal thrashing of Birmingham but insistent that his team were playing well, even when losing.

Looking ahead to Wednesday night, Rafa says that with Wigan in the relegation zone they will hopefully come out and attack, then leave spaces for Newcastle to exploit.

Nothing in Wigan’s form would suggest this is likely, as they are the league’s lowest goalscorers with 16 goals and yet only a handful of teams have conceded less than them, despite Wigan being second bottom.

Scoring only six at home all season, Wigan look sure to sit deep and in numbers, hoping to sneak a goal. In their last match at Villa, they held out until the 88th minute and nearly sneaked a point, despite having no efforts on goal in the whole 90 minutes.

As for scoring goals, with 16 goals (the same as entire Wigan squad) in 15 Championship starts, Rafa Benitez says he will be quite happy if Dwight Gayle ‘can continue to score goals in every game’.

Rafa Benitez Wigan press conference:

“Rob Elliot did well (for the U23s) last night. He made some good saves – I was really pleased for him.

“He (Elliot) will be pushing. Darlow is doing well and Matz is pushing, so hopefully we will keep this competition for a long time.

“We knew we were still doing well (even when losing) and that we didn’t deserve to lose the games.

“Wigan are at the bottom of the table, they have to attack, and hopefully we will find some spaces.

“I try not to talk though too much about our position in the table and our rivals.

“If Dwight can continue to score goals in every game, I will be happy with that.”
