The Rafa Benitez Sheffield Wednesday press conference has taken place on Friday morning.

The United boss didn’t shirk the Jonjo Shelvey question and says that while they support the midfielder, he must be ‘more mature’ in the future.

The club and player having accepted the five game punishment which starts with Monday night’s match.

As for coping without the playmaker, Rafa insists ‘we will manage’ and the club has other ‘good players’.

Also reassuring for supporters that Rafa insists Mike Ashley is adopting a ‘hands-off’ approach and ‘just wants people to get on with their jobs’ – if only it had always been this way!

As for the transfer window, the Newcastle Manager insists hat he is not interested in selling any player, including Aleksandar Mitrovic, about who there is ongoing speculation.

As for incoming, any player must be ‘Premier League level’, which appears to rule out any more short-term signings such as Daryl Murphy.

Rafa Benitez Sheffield Wednesday press conference:

“Merry Christmas to everyone here, and to the fans!

“We support Jonjo, and the main thing is that he knows he has to be careful in the future and concentrate on his football.

“He is a great player doing a great job for us. I hope he will be more mature after these things.

“We have options – we have some good players, and we will manage.

“Everyone is talking about Mitrovic but we don’t want to sell anybody, (Freddie) Woodman will go out on loan but I’m not interested in selling any of my players.

“For a player to come in they must be Premier League level – we are waiting to try to sign the right players, we are searching for players in different positions.

I think Mike Ashley is happy, he doesn’t want to be in the frame (day to day involvement) he just wants people to get on with their jobs.

“This week, we’ve had experience of visiting hospitals. I was really pleased with my players.”
