Nottingham Forest 2 Newcastle 1  – Friday 2 December 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“A travesty. An absolute travesty. We have seen some terrible referees down the years, but this one will surely go down as one of the worst ever witnessed in the last few decades.

“Step forward Steve Martin from Staffordshire, which is just 46 miles from Nottingham.

“Here is an official who brandished two red cards and denied us a perfectly good goal. An utterly hopeless performance. The assessor at the game must surely have seen the scale of the shambles. It was like Forest had 12 men.

“Shelvey sees maybe a deserved red but then Dummett in for an early bath when it should have been a yellow.

“Amid all of that Darlow saves a pen, Ritchie scores and then Darlow saves a second spot-kick.

“All of a sudden the serene progress has started to falter. Officialdom a major factor. We need better referees in this country.

“What an effort from the Newcastle players. The weekend ruined by that but they gave it everything.

“They have to use this as a motivation to go out and reclaim the initiative.

“We could finish tomorrow in second spot but there is time to get back on track.

“Oh, and Henri Lansbury anyone? What a plonker he is.”

Julio Taylor:

“Absolutely f***ing insane.”

Jamie Smith:

“What can you say to that?

“We’ve got used to inept officials in the Championship but this was utterly beyond comprehension.

“Shelvey was stupid and deserved to go. Dummett never touched the despicable Lansbury whose shameful antics were equally complicit in a daylight robbery.

“As well as this decision, Clark getting one perfectly good goal disallowed for nothing after being denied a clear pen for receiving a rugby tackle was equally as damaging.

“Add in an inexplicable booking for Gouffran and a suggestion of handball for their equaliser and you’ve got an impossible disadvantage.

“Full credit to our team though for a stunning performance in extreme adversity. They were magnificent and though we may well be off the top tomorrow we have a huge game v Birmingham to begin the bounce back. Use this as a spur.”

Scott:

“I’m just speechless!!!

“I don’t know where this season is going.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Last time I was this proud of toon team that hadn’t won, was a certain 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

“Hayden, Clark and obviously Darlow outstanding. We will have better days, mainly when the ref doesn’t screw us.”

Ben Cooper:

“When you concede two penalties, have two players sent off and have a goal disallowed, you are not going to win, so we have to be positive about the effort of the team.

“I don’t think there is any point talking about the referee, as awful as he was, a website only has so much space.

“I thought Rafa made a mistake with both substitutions, they were bound to hoy balls up and Anita was never going to cope, Diame looked like he couldn’t be arsed.

“I don’t want to be negative though, we’ll be lucky on other days and we are still obviously a very good team in that league.”

Kevin Christie:

“Absolutely infuriating.

“Clear pen on Clark at 0-0. His goal was also harshly disallowed.

“Shelvey’s an idiot and a liability despite his obvious talent – we’ll be without him until his hearing now and then for a long time after. Good riddance.

“Need to find a way without him. Never a red or a pen for Dummy’s challenge.

“Did very well second half under very difficult circumstances. Darlow proved his worth too. Tough week but we’ll recover from this.

“Keep the faith!”

Paul Lyon:

“I never lost belief we could win the game.

“The refereeing was bordering on the ridiculous (last game reffed was in the conference)

“In no way did we deserve that, no way! In fact it’s a disgrace!!!

“Hopefully we take that feeling of injustice into the next game and get 3 points at a canter (3 points will do).

“Howay me bonny lads!!!”

Toon Bano:

“This referee needs to be sacked immediately. I’ve never seen a first half like that in my entire life and never will again.

“Two red cards that weren’t, two penalties that weren’t, two penalties for us not given. Goal disallowed for no reason…and we were still winning at half-time!!

“Amazing effort, just gutted that we lost it on a set-piece after that heroic defending.”

Jamie Swan

“Quite difficult to put my feelings into words here. The refereeing so far in the Championship has been garbage, but tonight it stepped up a notch to toxic landfill level.

“Shelvey was a dick and Dummett oafish, both were harsh but could be argued either way I suppose. But what about Clark being wrestled to the ground in a Boston crab? No penalty. What about Clark’s good headed goal? Disallowed?

“We were streets ahead of Forest with 11, even with ten – but with nine?

“Howay man. Rafa should have ran on the pitch and speared the ref through the heart with the corner flag to finish off the vampire in black and green who’d sucked the life out the game.

“Two pens saved by Darlow, could have done with that on Tuesday! Even though he was shaky for their first goal, hero of the day. In all honesty two crap scruffy goals conceded.

“After two hours marathon against ‘Ull, that’ll have killed the lads. Hearts like lions for the boys who fought it out. Good on you.

“Message to the ref – gan boil ya heed.

“Message to my dentist, I’ve ground my teeth to stumps.

“Message to Lansbury, get your legs checked – they keep giving way, it might be something serious.”
