Newcastle want Chelsea central midfielder on loan in second half of season – Reports

An interesting name has been thrown into the mix for January, with claims that Rafa Benitez wants to bring Ruben Loftus-Cheek to St James Park.

The reports claim that the United boss hopes to land the 20 year old Chelsea midfielder on loan until the end of the season.

It was interesting that out of 12 summer signings, Rafa Benitez only utilised the loan market once, bringing in Loftus-Cheek’s teammate Christian Atsu on a year loan with view to buy.

This season was described as the potential breakthrough one for the talented Ruben Loftus-Cheek, having made 16 first team appearances last year – mainly from the bench, it was thought he’d get the chance to progress from there.

However, the England Under 21 international has seen just eight minutes of Premier League action and two League Cup starts under Antonio Conte.

Making his name as a central midfielder for Chelsea and England so far, the new Blues boss however, says that he believes Loftus-Cheek could even end up playing as a striker as he has great technique is very good one v one.

Rafa Benitez will know of the player from his time at the club when the midfielder/striker was aged 17 and maybe there could be some mileage in the idea of the Newcastle Manager using his contacts once again at his former club to strike a deal.

All guesswork as always at this stage when it comes to January and transfers but quite surprising how few likely names have been thrown up in the media concerning Newcastle – so this one from The Sun is just maybe worth bearing in mind.

Central midfield is an area where Newcastle are a little short, with only Jack Colback giving realistic cover for Hayden and Shelvey and he (Colback) has been out with a mystery eye problem in recent weeks.
