Newcastle star says ‘The players who cared’ have stayed to fight for promotion

There may have been players happy to desert Newcastle United in the summer and who didn’t care about the club BUT Geordie defender Paul Dummett insists that there were plenty who wanted to stay and ‘fight to get back to the Premier League’.

Like Jack Colback before him, Dummett is simply spelling out what the fans think of people like Sissoko, Janmaat, Townsend and Wijnaldum, all four of them desperate to get away despite helping to take Newcastle United down.

As for his own personal circumstances and the Newcastle fans who doubt him, Paul Dummett says there are always going to be some supporters who prefer certain players to others.

The Welsh international indicating that the only thing that matters is who Rafa Benitez thinks deserves a place in the first team.

Having started 20 of Newcastle’s 22 Championship matches, obviously Dummett is doing something that Rafa appreciates.

Paul Dummett speaking to the official match programme:

“There were players who maybe didn’t care but there was a lot who did care.

“The ones who cared have stayed and tried to fight to get back to the Premier League, where we belong.”

Getting ‘grief’:

“I think with any player, not just me, there is always going to be fans who don’t like some players and do like others.

“You do get a bit of grief but I have just got to try and look over that and try and play the best I can.

“The manager here is picking me, so there’s obviously a reason why.

“I’ve got to do what I can do, do what I’m good at, and hopefully that means the manager will carry on picking me.”
