“Newcastle are going to buy Premier League players in January”
After watching Newcastle demolish Birmingham 4-0, Alan Curbishley says that they are going to go out in January and buy ‘Premier League players’ to ‘cement them going up’ and in readiness for life in the top tier once again.
The former West Ham boss says that players can sign for Newcastle in the next transfer window ‘with the confidence’ that they will be playing in the Premier League come August.
One Premier League player that Newcastle United have already signed, came in for special praise from Alan Curbishley.
He thinks that Newcastle were the only club that Dwight Gayle would have considered leaving the top division for and that ‘Rafa Benitez knew what he was getting’.
The hat-trick against Birmingham was his second of the season and sends him further clear with 16 goals at the top of the Championship scoring charts.
Curbishley says that Gayle’s pace ‘frightens centre-halves to death because he is always on the move’, something typified by the three goals on Saturday when each time the Newcastle striker eluded his markers in the box.
Alan Curbishley speaking to Football on Five:
“I think Newcastle was the only club that could tempt Dwight Gayle out of the Premier League.
“I was surprised when he went but obviously Rafa Benitez knew what he was getting. Somebody who could lead the line – the pace frightens centre-halves to death because he is always on the move.
“When you are coming up against somebody like him, you know you are in for a difficult afternoon. When you have a centre-forward scoring goals like him, it gives you a lift in the dressing room.
“Every Manager…and Gary Rowett said it, every Manager that comes up against Newcastle says it is the best squad in the Championship that they have ever seen, that they are certs to go up.
“I think Newcastle in the (January transfer) window will go again. I think they are the one club who can really go and buy the players who will cement them going up.
“Newcastle are going to buy Premier League players (in January) and they can pay the Premier League wages. A player can go there with the confidence that they are going to be a Premier League player next season.
“I think Dwight Gayle could be up to 25 goals at least this season, depending on injuries.
“They are in a position where if they lost Dwight Gayle they could replace him and not a lot of teams can do that in the Championship.”
