Newcastle game yet again picked out for LMA Performance of the Week
Rafa Benitez has already picked up two LMA Performance of the Week awards this season, firstly for the 6-0 trouncing of QPR, then the dramatic comeback against Norwich.
Now the latest LMA award has been handed out for a Newcastle match and it is United on the ‘receiving’ end.
Their defeat against Sheffield Wednesday has seen Carlos Carvalhal and the Owls get the accolade, four weeks to the day when Blackburn and Owen Coyle also accepted the award after beating Newcastle 1-0 at St James Park.
Maybe a surprise that it is seen as such a remarkable achievement for a team in sixth to beat the one that was then top…
LMA Official Announcement:
‘LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: CARVALHAL’S OWLS BEAT NEWCASTLE TO CONTINUE RICH VEIN OF FORM
The League Managers Association’s five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, has determined that the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Sheffield Wednesday following their 1-0 victory against fellow promotion contenders Newcastle United on Monday 26th December 2016.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and a LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.
Glenn Loovens’ maiden goal for the Owls secured an outstanding win at table-topping Newcastle.
Wednesday served up a Boxing Day treat for the travelling thousands and those watching live on Sky TV as they turned in a resolute display to shock the hosts.
And overall, the Owls deserved the points, creative at one end and balanced at the other to post their fifth win from six Championship games.’
