Newcastle returned to the top of the league on Saturday afternoon but the Championship form table also makes more than interesting reading.

For several weeks in a row, we became accustomed to Newcastle showing a perfect WWWWWW over the past half dozen results…but now it is another club with that perfect form.

Step forward Derby County and…Steve McClaren.

A total clown when at St James Park (and many other places), back in his familiar surroundings he has engineered a remarkable turnaround.

With only 10 points from their first 11 Championship matches, since the new/old boss arrived Derby County have taken 22 points from nine games.

This past six game winning run culminated in a 3-0 victory over local rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby have kept five clean sheets in these last six matches. Derby have catapulted up to fifth position, now 11 points behind Newcastle.

As for Newcastle, they come fourth now in the Championship form table with 12 points from a possible 18, with Reading (15 points) and Brighton (14 points) also above them. Hopefully the win over Brighton can be the start of another eight match winning run…or better.

Wednesday night’s opponents are currently second bottom in the Championship with only 18 points from 20 matches.

In that context, seven points from Wigan’s last six games is a marked improvement and whilst they are the second tier’s lowest goalscorers with only 16 goals, in their last 13 Championship games (since 13 September) only Reading have scored more than one goal against them.
