Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez experience contrasting fortunes on return to Argentina

Eight years after Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini joined Newcastle United, the pair both returned to Argentina to join new clubs this summer.

Coloccini negotiated an early release from the ill-advised contract extension Newcastle had handed him in summer 2015, whilst Jonas was out of contract after sending a season at Deportivo la Coruna.

The former Newcastle Captain at last heading home to the club he supported as a boy, San Lorenzo, whilst Jonas Gutierrez signed up with Defensa y Justicia.

The Argentine League now has a break until February and after fourteen matches, the two clubs have had very contrasting fortunes.

San Lorenzo are third from the top with 28 points, three points behind Boca Juniors, whilst Defensa y Justicia are 19th of 30 clubs with 17 points – though with three wins from their last three matches things looked far worse a couple of weeks ago.

Coloccini’s club may be flying high but he has been plagued by injuries and only started five games, whilst in contrast Jonas Gutierrez has been getting regular football and featured in 10 of his club’s 14 matches.

With it being the time of year, Jonas Gutierrez has shown his soppy side yet again, taking to his Twitter account to express his love for all things Newcastle United.

The love is mutual!

Jonas Gutierrez via Twitter:

‘Blessing a great Merry Christmas and a happy new year to Newcastle fans. Happy to watch the club in promotion under coach Benitez. Once a Geordie…’

‘…Always a geordie. Always in my heart’

‘I am not a legend I am only proud to wear the black and white shirt. Thanks geordie nation.’

‘I am not on twitter to often but I always want the best for Newcastle. The only thing I can said is thanks geordies for all the love that’

‘You give me. Hope next year premiere again’
