Newcastle go into Christmas top of the league but the Championship form table sees the Magpies only in fourth.

Newcastle United have the beginnings of another potentially long run of wins, with three victories in a week. This means 12 points out of the last 18 due to the defeats against Blackburn & Forest, plus the earlier win at Leeds.

Derby’s winning run under Steve McClaren was eventually ended at the weekend with a draw at Fulham but they are still top of the Championship form table with 16 points.

The ultra-consistent Brighton are next with 14 points and no defeats, whilst who should turn up in third but our Boxing Day opponents.

Sheffield Wednesday are putting together some decent form in terms of results but reading comments from their fans, it sounds as though they aren’t really turning in dominant displays. The latest 1-0 win over Rotherham coming courtesy of a 94th minute goal, pretty much summing it up.

However, Newcastle were little different against both Wigan and Burton in these past two victories, when it was a few pieces of quality allied to gritty defending that returned full points.

Sheffield Wednesday lost in the play-offs last season and are showing decent consistency in being well placed once again, so United can’t afford any complacency against a team who are no mugs and who possess better recent form than the home side.
