Captain full of admiration for Newcastle’s player of the season (so far)

Jamaal Lascelles thinks he might have found his perfect partner in Ciaran Clark.

The Newcastle Captain saying that the pair ‘work well off each other’ and that Clark’s experience helps him to ‘read the game really well’.

Another aspect of both of their games that is a major benefit to the team according to Lascelles, is the fact that both of them talk a lot and look to help organise the other players.

This is in sharp contrast to what we saw under Fabricio Coloccini for far too long, rarely vocal on the pitch and shamefully refusing to fulfil his media duties off the pitch. Coloccini opting out of facing the TV cameras post-match, meant we repeatedly saw younger less experienced players having to explain the latest embarrassing reverse on the pitch.

The centre-back partnership is arguably the most important in the team and Ciaran Clark must be easily the biggest (positive) surprise of the season.

Arriving to little/no expectations from Newcastle fans, the former Villa defender has been outstanding.

Shelvey mat have provided the bullets, Gayle the goals, but it is Ciaran Clark who has been the best and most consistent player week after week.

Clark has started 17 Championship games and in those matches Newcastle have picked up a remarkable 43 out of 51 points, with 14 wins, one draw and only two defeats

Jamaal Lascelles:

“I think we work well off each other.

Ciaran Clark has played in the game a long time and reads the game really well.

“He is very vocal and helps me out a lot, talking and organising from the back.

“Me and him are so loud for the team – I think it is so important.

“Throughout the team, we’ve got a great balance – we have got players on the bench who can play as well.

“Whatever decision the manager goes for is obviously the right decision – the boys are doing well.”
