3rd ban in 3 months and Newcastle loan player admits he needs to have a think

Newcastle loan star Ivan Toney may have six goals this season but he is picking up cards at twice the rate.

On loan at Shrewsbury Town, the 20 year old striker is now looking at his third suspension of the season.

Already suspended for picking up five yellow cards, Ivan Toney also spent time on the sidelines after a red, now he has reached 10 yellow cards and is serving a two game suspension starting at the weekend.

The on loan forward picked up his latest booking in the FA Cup defeat at Fleetwood, Newcastle agreeing for the striker to be cup-tied, regardless if he is recalled to St James Park in January.

Ivan Toney says that the opposition are going to ‘try and bully you because they see you as a big kid’, in what he describes as a ‘more physical league’.

For a striker his disciplinary record is shocking and when Newcastle bought him in summer 2015, he’d also managed 10 yellow cards the year before for Northampton as an 18 year old in League Two.

As Ivan Toney admits. ‘Maybe I’ve got to change my style of play…’.

Ivan Toney:

“It’s a more physical league and everyone’s on you when you are the main target.

“They are going to try and bully you because they see you as a big kid really, but you’ve got to look after yourself out there.

“Obviously I am picking up silly yellow cards, but I’m just trying to look after myself up there and the referees see something they don’t like, which obviously I don’t always agree on.

“Maybe I’ve got to change my style of play.”
