Two Newcastle goalkeepers could go out in January – Reports
Wednesday has seen media claims that two Newcastle goalkeepers could go out in January, at least on a temporary basis.
Matz Sels was dropped after the Aston Villa match two months ago, the Belgian keeper culpable for the late equaliser and yet again looking unsure on crosses. Whilst there was also a ridiculous/bizarre over the top reaction on social media by a small number of alleged supporters.
According to the reports in the Chronicle, Sels’ old club Gent are in the market for a goalkeeper, with a short-term loan deal for Matz Sels potentially on the cards.
Karl Darlow has taken over and carried on from where he left off in May, Newcastle winning all eight Championship matches since that Villa draw.
The only sighting of Matz Sels in the meantime, was in the 6-0 stroll against Preston in the League Cup, the Newcastle goalkeeper having one save to make in the entire 90 minutes.
The Chronicle report also suggests that if Darlow is once again rested in the League Cup (v Hull), it will be a ‘close call’ between Newcastle goalkeepers Matz Sels and Rob Elliot to step in.
Elliot hasn’t had a single friendly game, or match for the reserves as he works towards full fitness, so for a quarter-final it would surely be inconceivable to both overlook Matz Sels AND throw in Rob Elliot for a first match of any kind in nine months?
The reports also claim that Freddie Woodman is potentially heading off to a Scottish Premier League side in the new year, with a number of clubs north of the border as well as Football League ones, keen to take him on loan until the end of the season.
