Steven Gerrard confirms he’s not coming to play for Rafa Benitez at Newcastle
Steven Gerrard has squashed the lazy stories that appeared when he parted company with LA Galaxy.
Newcastle United were supposedly a likely destination according to various media and the bookies made a reunion with Rafa Benitez one of the favourite outcomes.
However, Steven Gerrard has confirmed that he won’t be playing for Rafa and Newcastle this season, or indeed any other club.
The former England midfielder revealing on Thursday morning that he has retired from playing.
As for a possible coaching role at Newcastle which has also been put forward as a possibility by the media, that also looks to have been put to bed.
Steven Gerrard saying that his priority now is working in the media for BT Sport and that working as a manager or as an assistant is for the future.
The former Liverpool favourite does say that he will look to get a little experience within a club in his spare time but you’d imagine that if he heading back to live in the north west then that is where he will do that, with Liverpool surely the most likely destination.
Steven Gerrard speaking to Gary Lineker on BT Sport:
“The body starts talking to you, the pains and the aches get more regular.
“The way you feel out on the pitch changes.
“Over the past couple of years I have felt myself slowing down a bit. Basically I can’t deliver what I used to be able to deliver and that becomes frustrating.
“In the future I do have dreams and aspirations of having a go at management, or assisting the manager, and being back involved.
“But I have many years to do that and the important thing for me is to concentrate on BT – then in my spare time try and gain some experience.”
