Rangers star Wes Foderingham has revealed that he was a childhood Newcastle fan.

The Glasgow club’s first choice goalkeeper was born and raised in London and despite that, grew up supporting the Magpies, and is still a fan now.

To younger Newcastle supporters this may seem a little surprising with the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea on his doorstep.

However, this was the Sir Bobby Robson era and Shay Given was the childhood idol of Wes Foderingham.

By far Newcastle’s best goalkeeper in recent decades, Given was outstanding in his 10 years at St James Park, no wonder an aspiring goalkeeper such as Wes Foderingham was so captivated.

Shay Given was voted by his fellow professionals into the PFA team of the season in both the 2001/02 and 2005/06 seasons.

The Newcastle keeper staying loyal to the club as it fell apart, until even he could take no more of the nonsense of Mike Ashley, Dennis Wise and Joe Kinnear.

Wes Foderingham speaking on the Rangers Podcast:

Shay Given (was my childhood idol).

“I am a Newcastle fan and he was the number one goalkeeper at the time.

“He was just fantastic at Newcastle United for a number of years.

“A top top Premier League keeper as well for a number of years – a fantastic career.”
