After picking up the PFA Player of the month for October, Dwight Gayle is set to double up with the official Championship Player of the month award.

Dwight Gayle was one of six players nominated for the Championship PFA Player of the Month which is voted for by fans – the result couldn’t have been clearer.

A total of 11,992 votes were cast for the six nominations and Dwight Gayle received an incredible 9,042 of them!

The other five players received less than 25% of the votes (2,950) between them, with Dwight Gayle registering over 75%.

9042 Dwight Gayle (Newcastle) and his nearest challenger 846 Gary Hooper (Sheffield Wednesday) then: 751 Sam Baldock (Brighton), 669 Peter Whittingham (Cardiff), 399 Massimo Luongo (QPR), 285 Paul Gallagher (Preston).

A little bit strange to see Gayle up against a completely different set of contenders for the official award, which is presented by the Championship after some kind of judging process.

Newcastle won all five Championship matches in October and Dwight Gayle scored four goals in four appearances last month.

The striker scored twice in the 3-1 win over Brentford and then three days later scored both goals in the win at Barnsley.

The nominations for the Championship Player of the Month award for October 2016 are below, with the official Championship write-up on each candidate:

Ali Al-Habsi (Reading)

A stellar month for the 34-year-old Oman international, flying across his goal to make stunning save after stunning save. A series of reaction stops preserved clean sheets in the wins over Rotherham and Nottingham Forest.

Sone Aluko (Fulham)

Back to his dynamic best, mesmerising defenders with his dribbling ability and taking them on both inside and out. Scored with a lovely solo effort against Barnsley, then had a hat-trick of assists in a memorable display against Huddersfield.

Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion)

A model of consistency at the back, his influence was evident as Brighton conceded just three goals in five games. Scored with a towering header against Norwich and set up the winner at Sheffield Wednesday with an exquisite flicked pass.

Dwight Gayle (Newcastle United)

Wearing the famous number nine jersey at St James’ Park clearly suits him. Four goals from four October games showcased his speed, direct running and finishing prowess as he bagged two apiece against Brentford and Barnsley.

As well as a potential double for the Newcastle striker, this could see a Newcastle United double of a different sort as well, with Thursday seeing Rafa Benitez predictably one of the four challengers for Championship Manager of the month for October.

The winners of both Manager and Player awards will be announced tomorrow (Friday).
