Aleksandar Mitrovic has been named as a possible January target for Napoli.
Having been frozen out of the first team picture for most of this season, the Serbian striker has scored four goals in his last two matches, the second of those games last Saturday at Preston being also only his second Championship start of the campaign.
Napoli sold star striker Gonzalo Higuain for around £76m in the summer, as Juventus reinvested their Pogba cash.
As a knock-on, Napoli spent some £60m of the Higuain cash to strengthen their own squad, including £27m on Ajax forward Arkadiusz Milic.
However, despite four goals in seven Serie A matches for Milic, it has been widely reported in Italy that Napoli are still looking to add more firepower to replace what they lost with superstar Higuain’s departure.
Well connected Italian journalist Ciro Venerato of Rai Sport has now reported that he understands Aleksandar Mitrovic has been added to the January shortlist of possible strikers Napoli are chasing.
Their first choice is believed to be Andrea Belotti, the up and coming 22 year old Torino striker who has scored 6 goals in 8 Serie A starts this season and who also scored for Italy in a first start for his country last month.
Failure to land Belotti could lead to a move for Mitrovic according to Ciro Venerato.
How Newcastle would react to any Napoli move is an unknown.
Whilst Mitrovic is a clear fan favourite for NUFC, Rafa Benitez looks set to continue on his one striker policy and with Dwight Gayle fit again there will only be room for one regular starter. Championship top scorer Gayle v four goals in two games Mitrovic.
