More positivity on Aleksandar Mitrovic for Newcastle fans ahead of Sunday’s tough looking clash at Elland Road.
Saturday saw the United striker add to his growing confidence with a fifth international goal in as many games, as he scored the crucial late equaliser in Cardiff.
Tuesday night sees Serbia play Ukraine but happily for Newcastle fans, Mitrovic isn’t named in the starting 11, which can only be good news with the match against Leeds in mind.
Also, Mitrovic has been talking to the Serbian newspaper Blic.
The Serbian striker saying that his only focus is to fight to be in the Newcastle first team and to convince Rafa Benitez he deserves a place in the team.
Sunday sees the United boss having to make arguably his biggest and most difficult decision of the season so far.
Dwight Gayle has now had a month to shake off the injury he felt following the 3-0 win over Ipswich, sitting out the cup and league wins over Preston, as well as the victory over Cardiff.
Gayle though remains the Championship’s top scorer but in his absence over that trio of games, Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored four goals in three matches – meaning Rafa Benitez has a very difficult choice when deciding who plays up front on Sunday.
Mitrovic says that his recent goal streak gives him ‘self-confidence’ and just hopes he is allowed to ‘continue the run’.
We all await with interest to see the manager’s decision but what is for sure is that Newcastle are now in a very healthy position in terms of attacking options, as well as this current run of eight wins in all competitions.
Mitrovic speaking to Serbian newspaper Blic as reported by Sport Witness:
“My job is to do well at Newcastle and fight for the first 11, the coach (Rafa Benitez) is the one who chooses.
“If you give me a chance, I will try to use it in the best way possible.
“Goals give me self-confidence and help me a lot, so I hope I’ll continue the run.”
