Exclusive claims Newcastle lining up January move for Wilfred Ndidi

On Sunday morning, an exclusive claims that Newcastle United are lining up a move for Wilfred Ndidi

The 19 year old centre-back plays for Genk and has become one of the highest rated young players in Belgium.

The Chronicle report that Newcastle have watched the player a number of times and that Genk have indicated they may be ready to sell in the new year.

Hamburg have had an offer of £5m turned down previously, with the player said to be valued at at a minimum of £8m by his club.

Despite his youth, Wilfred Ndidi has already played 74 times in all competitions for his club side and has five caps at senior level for Nigeria, making his full international debut at 18.

Rafa Benitez has already shown his liking for versatile players with his signings so far and as well as being primarily a central defender, Ndidi can also play at full-back and as a defensive midfielder.

Described as strong, quick and skilful, Wilfred Ndidi is being watched by a number of other clubs as well as Newcastle.

The jury is out on exactly what value Newcastle got when buying 20 year olds Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht for around £25m for the pair. Mbemba looking the best of a bad bunch in Newcastle’s defence last season, whilst Rafa hasn’t been inclined to give Mitrovic much of a chance this season until Dwight Gayle’s injury.

If United are promoted, it will be interesting to see where the United boss sees the pair fitting in his plans, if anywhere.

As for Wilfred Ndidi, if Newcastle are to be hopefully preparing for a Premier League season next season, then no doubt they will need to start looking for players as soon as possible, rather than waiting for what is sure to be a very competitive summer market.
