Ex-Newcastle star says Rafa Benitez would need to sell most of the squad if promoted

Former Newcastle star, Jermaine Jenas, says that the two major things happened in the summer at St James Park, that needed to.

That was the retention of Rafa Benitez and then spending plenty in the transfer market.

Jermaine Jenas thinks Rafa has built a very good squad for the challenge of the Championship…but there is just one problem.

The one-time Newcastle midfielder thinks the current group of players can get United promoted BUT that is they do go up, the Magpies will then have to sell most of the squad and bring in better players, if they are to ‘stay in the Premier League’.

Jermaine Jenas speaking on BT Sport:

“I think they (Newcastle) would struggle to be honest with the current squad in the Premier League.

“They are doing very well in the Championship, I think the two big things that they needed to do they did.

“Which was to keep Rafa Benitez and also spend a lot of money.

“They did that and built a good squad but the bulk of the players…if they did come up…they would have to sell on.

“Get more quality to stay in the Premier League.”
