Eddie Howe rubbishes claims of Newcastle move for star player
Eddie Howe has rubbished reports in recent days, which said one of his star players was on his way to Newcastle.
The Chronicle claimed that Callum Wilson was set to come to Tyneside but the Bournemouth boss said ‘there’s no substance to the story’.
Whilst Matt Ritchie did swap the Premier League for life in the Championship, he only had a year left on his contract when signing for Newcastle, after the Magpies offered him a deal that Bournemouth said they couldn’t have got close to.
However, this Callum Wilson to Newcastle always looked a bit dubious, as he is first choice striker at the club and signed a new four contract only four months ago in July.
Wilson has a striking scoring record in recent seasons scoring 50 league goals in his 102 league starts (plus four as a sub), spread over the Premier League, Championship and League One, with Coventry and Bournemouth.
With four Premier League goals so far this season in 12 appearances, Callum Wilson is following up on the promise he showed last season when scoring five in the top tier in only nine starts (plus four as a sub). A serious ACL injury (similar to Rolando Aarons) ruling him out for most of the campaign.
Eddie Howe speaking to the Daily Echo:
“It (reports of Callum Wilson heading to Newcastle) has got no relevance to us.
“Not to the football club or to Callum. There’s no substance to the story.
“The only time that will influence him is if he believes it or reads it himself.
“And I would encourage my players to just concentrate on their day-to-day job.”
