Blackburn boss “We were backed by 1,500 fans and it sounded like 15,000″
A final scoreline of Newcastle 0 Blackburn 1 and not surprisingly visiting manager Owen Coyle was in buoyant mood after the game.
You can’t really claim Newcastle deserved much when they only had two shots on target and I suppose you can forgive Coyle for getting carried away and exaggerating his team’s performance, rather than pointing to Newcastle’s poor showing.
When it comes to exaggeration, the Blackburn boss also carried it through to the visiting fans.
Whilst a 52,000 crowd once again produced an abysmal atmosphere from a Toon perspective, Owen Coyle’s claims that the visiting ‘1,500 fans sounded like 15,000’ is maybe just stretching it a ‘little’…
Nobody likes to lose but sometimes maybe it is needed to bring people back down to earth, reminding them that bigger miracles such as world domination may need a little more time for Rafa.
As for the visitors, you can’t begrudge them their day – Newcastle players and fans just have to move on and look to get another nine match winning run started…
“We were backed by 1,500 fans and it sounded like 15,000, from the first whistle to the last they gave us unbelievable support and we want that every week.
“We certainly believed at our club that we could get that result. Probably not many people outside of Blackburn Rovers thought that way.
“To do that we had to be tuned up to what we had asked of the players and be brave to the pressure that Newcastle United put us under which came about a bit in the second half.
“But I’ve got to say we dictated the first-half, could have been in front, their keeper made a wonderful save from Danny Graham’s header and we had a few other opportunities.
“We scored a very good goal through Charlie Mulgrew, a lovely bit of movement, but we looked a threat all day.
“Newcastle ramped it up late on, but I think Jason Steele only had one save to make and that was from Ciaran Clark from the second phase of a corner.
“They put plenty of balls into the box but the back lads stood up to everything that was asked of them. It was a wonderful all-round display.
“Sometimes you come to big stadiums like this, against a team who I have no doubts will win the league, you can ride your luck, your keeper makes some great saves and they hit the woodwork etc, but nothing could be further from the truth.
“We have earned and deserved those three points.”
