Going into the Brentford match, Matt Ritchie was at risk (if selected) of picking up a suspension with another yellow card.Checking the stats ahead of Saturday’s match, it is surprising to see Matt Ritchie on the brink of a suspension.
The Scottish winger wasn’t involved that day but successfully got through the game against Barnsley without adding a fifth booking to his season.
However, as well as putting in another very good performance, Jonjo Shelvey did pick up a yellow, putting him in the same position as Ritchie – facing a ban if he picks up one more.
Just like Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey has had a real edge to his game this season, the extra energy and drive that was missing for most of his time at Newcastle last season, means he is a real positive this season but also getting a bit carried away – the fact he’s not great at tackling doesn’t help.
Vurnon Anita picked up a red card at home to Wolves and these are how the 31 yellows are spread around, in contrast the opposition teams have picked up 35 yellows and one red (Brighton’s Baldock):
4 Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey
3 Paul Dummett, Dwight Gayle, Yoan Gouffran, Jamaal Lascelles,
2 Mohamed Diame, Ayoze Perez, Jack Colback
1 Grant Hanley, Daryl Janmaat, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Matz Sels, Christian Atsu
