Gini Wijnaldum and Siem de Jong joined Newcastle United a year apart.

Both of them were desperate to leave this summer as Wijnaldum forced a move to Liverpool, whilst Siem de Jong urgently needed regular football to relaunch his career at St James Park, or elsewhere, ending up at PSV on a season long loan.

Now the pair of them have been surprisingly reunited, with Siem de Jong getting a shock international call-up after completing only one first team game for PSV.

Gini Wijnaldum sharing this photo via social media of the two sharing a joke:

Despite starting all seven Premier League matches and Liverpool only two points off the top of the table, it still hasn’t been plain sailing for Wijnaldum.

Just as Newcastle fans did, many Liverpool supporters have commented on the fact that the midfielder tends to disappear for long period of the games.

United fans at least had the consolation of Gini Wijnaldum scoring 11 goals but Liverpool supporters are yet to see one.

As for Siem de Jong, he admits to have being in shock after Danny Blind called him up, with an injury to his brother Luuk ironically helping to pave the way.

Siem de Jong says ‘Too bad’ that his call-up has happened because of injury to other players, ironically his brother Luuk one who has had to pull out with a concussion.

Holland play World Cup qualifiers against Belarus (Thursday 6 October) and France (Sunday 9 October), with Siem de Jong saying that he is hoping for some ‘game time’ in the two qualifiers – now that would be some story in terms of his recovery from this past two years of misery.
