Newcastle v Ipswich player ratings – Two tied at the top and the odd surprise
The results of the Newcastle v Ipswich player ratings.
A stunning opening as Newcastle took Ipswich apart with a flowing move and goal in the opening minute, only to waste chances as they dominated, before two late goals gave a more realistic look to the scoreline
What did the Newcastle fans make of each player on the pitch?
Two players couldn’t be divided at the top, with two goal Ayoze Perez (7.8) and playmaker Jonjo Shelvey (7.8) sharing the honour.
Next best was Ciaran Clark (7.4), the defender putting in yet another display where he hardly had to break sweat in dealing with the opposition’s threat.
Four other players rated 7.0 or higher, with Matt Ritchie (7.1) adding a goal to a typical spirited performance. Yedlin (7.2) impressed up and down that right hand side with Lascelles (7.1) very solid alongside Clark, whilst Darlow (7.0) had few real shots to contend with but by coming and taking a series of high balls he took pressure off his defenders.
Four of the starting eleven ducked under that 7.0 mark.
Jack Colback (6.3) was lowest of all with a low key display, whilst on 6.6 we had a trio of Gayle, Gouffran and Dummett.
Personally, I thought the striker did pretty well with an all round battling performance, whilst apart from the first goal, fair to say that Gouffran and Dummett didn’t provide that much going forward down the left and it was from that side Newcastle seemed to be put under the most pressure.
