Newcastle United International 11 pictured – Strange statistic

Despite the drop into the Championship, it appears that Newcastle United have never before had quite as many players heading out on international duty.

The United players could feature in up to 28 different international matches around the world in these next nine days.

This is a team we have put together featuring 11 of those Newcastle United players currently away representing their countries:

If you look closely, you will see one big stand out statistic.

Only four (Dummett, Clark, Diame and Atsu) of these 11 international players started the game at Rotherham on Saturday and none of the other seven were injured.

Quite remarkable and no wonder some of the other Championship clubs see it as not a level playing field in the second tier.

When you consider that other Newcastle players such as Siem de Jong (on loan at PSV), Isaac Hayden (Under 21s), Freddie Woodman (Under 21s), Kyle Cameron (Under 21s and on loan at Newport) and Daryl Murphy (sent home injured from Ireland training camp) were also called up but weren’t needed in the starting 11 v Rotherham, it paints an even broader picture of the disparity between NUFC and most other clubs.

In addition, both Adam Armstrong (on loan at Barnsley) and Callum Roberts are in the England Under 20s squad.

Vurnon Anita is of course away with Holland and did play on Saturday at Rotherham.
