The midfield the fans would choose for Newcastle v Brentford

Yesterday we asked NUFC fans who you would like to see line up in the midfield for Newcastle v Brentford.

Possibly the most competitive part of the pitch with numerous options, we asked supporters to pick the four players they’d like to see playing across the middle of the pitch on Saturday.

So on Wednesday we gave Newcastle fans nine options, listed below is the percentage of supporters who backed each player:

93% Jonjo Shelvey

89% Matt Ritchie

76% Isaac Hayden

60% Yoan Gouffran

50% Christian Atsu

11% Jack Colback

10% Mohamed Diame

 8% Ayoze Perez

 3% Cheick Tiote

Some striking highlights there…

Jonjo Shelvey (93%) now overtaking Matt Ritchie (89%) as the key player in the midfield, although of course they play very different roles.

On the other hand, supporters clearly see no future for Cheick Tiote (3%) and hopefully he will find a new club in the UAE in the coming days.

Jack Colback (11%) doesn’t have many fans believing he should get in ahead of Isaac Hayden (76%), whilst fair to say Mohamed Diame (10%) and Ayoze Perez (8%) aren’t currently seen as serious midfield options.

So with Shelvey, Ritchie and Hayden all seen as easy choices to make, it came down to pretty much a clear choice of Yoan Gouffran (60%) or Christian Atsu (50%), although they have also taken some votes off Matt Ritchie etc.

A big contrast, with Atsu more your typical winger – trying to beat his man and create chances, whilst Gouffran acting more as a wide midfielder, a more workmanlike role and doing a lot more work going backwards as well as in attack.

Great at last to see options for a Newcastle manager and as always, interesting to see what Rafa goes with this time.

(This is the goalkeeper and back four that fans chose earlier this week)
