Jackie Milburn brought the streets of Newcastle to a standstill 28 years ago today – Video

Difficult to believe that it is really 28 years since Jackie Milburn brought the Newcastle streets to a standstill.

The Newcastle legend was taken from us on 9 October 1988, dying tragically young at the age of only 64 (born 11 May 1924).

The funeral service was held at Newcastle Cathedral four days later and I was working over in Gateshead at the time, a few of us walked over the High Level Bridge on an extended lunch break to join the rest of the Newcastle fans/Geordie public paying their respects.

I both could and couldn’t believe just how many people were crowding the streets, watching in silence as the funeral procession eventually passed by on the way to the cathedral.

A great player and a great man, only a shame he didn’t live longer to give the benefit of his passion and integrity to another generation.

We are so lucky that in Alan Shearer we found somebody to pick up the mantle as both player and person, somebody who together with Jackie Milburn represents so much that is great about Tyneside and the wider north east.

Some great footage from 13 October 1988 below, which has been uploaded by Newcastle United 1980-1994 Videos.
