The greatest Newcastle goal that never was – Video

It takes something special to be still fuming after a 5-1 win but that was Robert Lee in a match 23 years ago.

With Newcastle up against Brentford on Saturday, it took me back to the last time NUFC played them in a league (beat them 4-1 in the League Cup in 2001) match.

It was 6 March 1993 and Newcastle were marching to promotion with Kevin Keegan, playing some great football.

This is the Newcastle team that faced Brentford that day:

Pavel Srnicek, Kevin Scott, Mark Stimson, Barry Venison, Steve Howey (Alan Neilson) John Beresford, Paul Bracewell, Lee Clark, Rob Lee, Liam O’Brien, David Kelly

Newcastle triumphed 5-1 with goals from Paul Bracewell, Robert Lee, David Kelly and Lee Clark (2) BUT it was a Newcastle goal that didn’t count which was the big talking point.

Brentford were attacking but Newcastle won the ball back, only for the visiting keeper to come out of his goal and clear the danger…the ball though was cleared to Robert Lee (in the Newcastle half!) and he hit a 60/70 yard left foot volley to claim a wonder goal.

Amongst all of this, the referee made the astonishing decision to blow his whistle for a (Newcastle!) free-kick at the exact moment Robert Lee was lashing the ball towards the Brentford goal.

Just watch the bizarre action below and Robert Lee’s reaction when interviewed afterwards – it’s a classic!
