Gone in 60 seconds – Newcastle 3 Ipswich 0
Newcastle 3 Ipswich 0 – Saturday 22 October
It was a case of gone in 60 seconds at St James Park today.
Only seconds into the match, a flowing move that included Karl Darlow, saw the ball fizzed around until a long ball out to Paul Dummett led to the left back crossing for Yoan Gouffran to flick-header it on and arriving late, Ayoze Perez couldn’t really miss as he volleyed in from just outside the six yard box.
That lit the fuse for what was arguably Newcastle’s best 20 minutes of the season so far, flowing football pulling the visitors apart and it could have been three or four to NUFC before Ipswich had got their bearings.
In the middle of that exhilarating opening to the game, with basically their only real threat of the first half Ipswich almost equalised. Showing you have to get the goals when on top, former Newcastle striker Leon Best hit the bar with a smart turn and shot.
The second half saw a double substitution for the visitors and with two up front, Ipswich made it harder for Newcastle to play it out from the back and dominate so easily.
Just as I thought Rafa was tempting fate by not refreshing Newcastle with one or two subs, NUFC sparked back into life and Ritchie laid on Perez’ and Newcastle’s second.
THEN Rafa started making his substitutions, three new faces in eight minutes.
In the middle of those changes, Matt Ritchie completed the scoring with a low strike across the keeper.
Another great day at the office and as well as enjoying the three goals, Newcastle fans will be very curious to see just why Dwight Gayle wasn’t awarded a penalty at 1-0 in front of the Leazes End. Ipswich keeper Bialkowski looked to clearly bring the Newcastle striker down right in front of the goal…and if it wasn’t a penalty then surely it had to be a yellow card for a Gayle dive?
