Simon Smith has given an update on how all of the Newcastle goalkeepers are getting on.

According to the NUFC goalkeeping coach, things are going to get even more interesting when it comes to the first team picture.

Matz Sels started the season in pole position but Karl Darlow has now taken over and is showing the same level as he was at the end of last season.

Simon Smith has praised both keepers for ‘solid performances’ in this past week, a clean sheet for Darlow against Ipswich in the 3-0 win, whilst Sels also picked one up in that 6-0 thrashing of Preston in the cup.

On Friday Rafa Benitez said that Rob Elliot was also getting close to a return and Simon Smith has revealed that the Irish international has now progressed to joining in three goalkeeping sessions in the past week.

England Under 21 international Freddie Woodman played twice for the reserves as they lost 2-1 to Fulham before beating Hartlepool 5-1 on Friday.

Meanwhile, Simon Smith also confirmed that Paul Woolston was looking at getting more games in a further loan spell, after impressing at Darlington earlier this season.
