Dubious claims of £18m Chelsea move for Newcastle star

Chelsea are looking to take Jamaal Lascelles to Stamford Bridge according to reports this morning.

The media claims say a January move is on the cards with Chelsea prepared to pay £18m for the Newcastle defender.

With Newcastle’s imposing start to the Championship season, there had been some worries expressed by United fans that Premier League clubs could come in for some of the NUFC stars.

However, the worries are generally about the creative/goalscoring players such as Gayle, Ritchie and Shelvey, rather than defensive players.

Jamaal Lascelles has played 14 Championship matches and helped Newcastle keep seven clean sheets, with 11 goals conceded.

The latest being yesterday’s 2-1 win at Preston, Lascelles marshalling his troops as Newcastle were put under intense pressure with the referee bizarrely playing 10 minutes of injury time.

The report in the Sun on Sunday says that Chelsea are looking to buy a young centre-back with so many defenders at the wrong end of the age band, Terry is 35, Cahill 30, Ivanovic 32 and David Luiz turning 30 before the season is out.

Whilst Lascelles has a similar physique to John Terry, it all sounds a bit dubious, as you would expect them to go for a more finished article than the Newcastle Captain who turns 23 in November and has only started 10 Premier League matches in his career.

From  a Newcastle perspective, Rafa Benitez made the former Forest defender his captain and in these days of crazy money, £18m is almost small change compared to the risks of selling somebody who is key to the promotion drive for NUFC.
