Classic comments from Preston fans after 2-1 defeat to Newcastle
After three of hours of football against Newcastle over the space of five days and watching eight goals end up in their net, Preston fans at last saw their team score.
So were they happy…perhaps not!!
Some great comments below from Preston fans about the 2-1 defeat on Saturday, some seeing it as simply a close defeat to the best team in the Championship but plenty others feeling just a little hard done by…
Comments taken from top Preston fans message board PNE-online.net:
‘We were probably the better team on the day and create better chances.
However they have had 2 chances and scored both, which usually happens when you’ve got a £13m striker (he’s second choice too).
With better refereeing and a bit more composure in our finishing then we’d have got something today.
Thought our overall performance was superb though.’
‘I felt a draw was the least we deserved but we didn’t even get that. First half they did not threaten at all…gifted then 2 goals the first was the only real attempt they had on goal up to that point in the game,
How we didn’t get a pen late doors only the ref will know but saying it was blatant is an understatement. To say they are top of the league we have nothing to worry about, and if we keep playing to this level we will be much nearer the top than the other end in May.’
‘F***ing robbed today.’
‘Disappointing result but fantastic performance by whole team. Daniel Johnson was my man of match as he controlled midfield in a manner that he’s not often shown. We did deserve to win overall and had the best chances but Mitrivic showed what money can buy with 2 well taken goals.
Over 20,000, a really hard fought game and an enjoyable experience.’
‘The issue I had with the referee wasn’t so much the big decisions as his general handling of the game, allowing Mitrovic to commit offence after offence without action, letting Shelvey back chat constantly and falling for cheating from both Ritchie and Mitrovic.’
‘A good performance and they knew that they were up against the grown ups. Shame the refereeing decisions gave the one man advantage again.
We dominated possession and kept the ball well throughout.
Good turnout from the North East but I was surprised how quiet they were until they scored.’
‘At the end of the day we have lost to the champions. They were clinical when needed. Pushed them right to the end and thoroughly deserved a point.
How the f*** we didn’t get at least 2 penalties is beyond me. Disgrace of a referee, anywhere else on the field and it’s a free kick!! Suppose it being Newcastle, too scared to give it!
It’s been a brilliant month for us and showed some great form. Interesting next few games, more than capable of picking up the points.’
‘Atrocious referee. Ruined the game by effectively being their 12th man. Blatant pushes in the box went unpunished on three occasions. Yet he gave them free-kicks time and time again, allowed timewasting and let Mitrovic cheat and foul repeatedly. Disgusting that refs like him can get away with criminal performances like that.
North End deserved a point at the very least. Probably all three points considering the amount of chances we created. Resting players midweek seemingly worked in terms of our energy levels.
Newcastle looked a very bland outfit. Just a joyless bunch of mercenaries.’
‘Proud of them all today, shame to lose that match against a very good Newcastle side.’
‘We can be proud Nobbers tonight lads and lasses. Believe me that was a great performance from the lads.
Many positives today , we can compete with the best in this league.
Newcastle employed the dark arts as expected and the ref. got a phone call at half time from a fat slave driving greedy cockney tw*t.’
‘They know they have got out of jail…proud of the lads today, outstanding. Their fans came with a bit of a reputation but nowhere near the level of Sheff Weds in my opinion.’
‘If some twonk threw a coin at their full back (DeAndre Yedlin) from the Kelly near the end I hope they get a life ban.’
‘Unlucky guys but at the end of the day they’re far and away the best team in the league and very few will take anything from them.’
‘Well first of all we did ourselves proud and should have won.
Secondly not only did we compete we were the better side. They didn’t have a shot in the first half!
Thirdly whilst we competed with them we couldn’t take on that disgusting excuse for a ref too.
Mind we certainly rattled their ivory cage the cheating sh*tbags.’
‘I have seen a few poor referees at Deepdale in my time but that man was clearly not up to the job today.
He couldn’t control the Newcastle players and was clearly intimidated by them especially Shelvey and when it came to the big decisions ie the 2 penalty claims he bottled it.
He ruined that game which was a great spectacle I thought, a massive club in Newcastle with great support and a great game was witnessed by all. Massive performances out there by a number of players.
Newcastle are a top side with quality oozing through it but at times we made them look very ordinary and we had chances especially in that second half. They like to talk to the referee and influence him and it worked.’
‘Agree with everything you’ve written there.
Can I add something else though, despite everything that happened today, on field, what the hell are Newcastle doing in this league?
Newcastle will win this league by easter. No doubt whatever.’
‘In Mitrovic Newcastle have a real nuisance that no one likes to defend against. But apart from him, Ritchie and a solid back 4 we made them look average today and should have taken at least a point.’
‘With all the Wonga that Sports Direct United have at their disposal there would be something wrong if they hadn’t won the league by Easter.’
‘Taking my rose tinted glasses off, I thought the referee was decent other than he bottled the penalty decision in the last minute
The rest of the time I thought he was spot on.’
‘Can only assume yesterday he was a bit overawed by reffing such a big club or maybe because Shelvey was in his face all game he was a bit dazed by the glare from his slap head.
He let a dive go in the first half and did not seem to bother with dissent from Newcastle players. Bearing in mind he sent Moyes off during the week maybe he is a closet Newcastle fan.’
‘Would like to see the two penalty appeals again, from my superior vantage point at the top of the STFS both seemed definite penalties at the time, I think both would have been given at the other end in front of the Geordie hordes.’
‘Newcastle just knew how to play a non-premier league official who will not have had a tougher day at the office.
Their antics, laughing, arm round him and feigning injuries is not often seen in this league to the degree it was on show and it gave them an advantage as the referee didn’t have the experience or the bollocks to see past it, Clattenburg on the other hand would have seen right through it as he has the experience of it.
To watch it from the stands was hilarious, it was like the Newcastle players had him in a trance.’
‘When I looked I could only find one other Newcastle game that he had refereed this season and that was Aston Villa 1-1 Newcastle.
If I remember correctly, that game was televised. Again, if I remember correctly, he failed to give Newcastle a couple of blatant penalties, which probably cost the Magpies a couple of points.
Maybe, he evened things up for them. Here’s hoping that the next time he takes charge of PNE he does the same for us.’
