Eight matches in midweek saw a record number of fans watch the fourth round games, including Newcastle’s six goal thrashing of Preston.

The full team is listed below, then following that, write-ups on the three Newcastle players chosen.

EFL Cup Team of the Fourth Round

Marco Silvestri (Leeds)

Michael Dawson (Hull)

Cheikhou Kouyate (West Ham)

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Sofiane Boufal (Southampton)

Ander Herrera (Manchester United)

Mohamed Diame (Newcastle United)

Matt Ritchie (Newcastle United)

Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Aleksandar Mitrovic (Newcastle United)

Alex Oxlade-Camberlain (Arsenal)

Manager: Garry Monk

Winger: Matt Ritchie (Newcastle United)

Another star showing for Newcastle came from Ritchie, who caused Preston problems all night.

The winger created two goals with his dangerous deliveries from out wide, while he won, and converted, a penalty in the romp.

Midfielder: Mohamed Diame (Newcastle United)

Newcastle grabbed the EFL Cup headlines with a 6-0 rout of Preston North End, and Diame is the first of a trio of inclusions.

The powerful midfielder netted his first two goals for the club with superb long-range efforts.

Forward: Aleksandar Mitrovic (Newcastle United)

The third Newcastle man in the team, Mitrovic was on fire, scoring twice and proving a handful for the Preston defence.

The Serbian striker scored the first and fourth goals, played his part in Diame’s first of the night, but didn’t manage to wrestle the ball away from Ritchie for the Magpies spot-kick!
