Young Newcastle star gets surprise England promotion

Great news for young Newcastle star Freddie Woodman.

The 19 year old goalkeeper has received a surprise promotion to the England Under 21s.

They face Norway in a European Championships 2017 qualifier on Tuesday, the game a 5.45pm kick-off at Colchester’s Community Stadium.

Freddie Woodman joined up with Newcastle teammate Isaac Hayden and the rest of Gareth Southgate’s squad on Sunday night at St. George’s Park.

Ironically, the call-up came only hours after a very rare mistake by the United keeper gifted Brazil the winner yesterday afternoon.

Playing for the England Under 20s, Freddie Woodman failed to deal with a back pass and Brazil scored their second, and what turned out to be winning, goal.

England went down 2-1 and to make matters worse, Adam Armstrong saw his penalty saved with the score at 1-0.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had pulled out of the England under-21 squad last week but no replacement was then made, only for Sunday’s move for Woodman to be added to Manchester City’s Angus Gunn and Joe Wildsmith of Sheffield Wednesday.
