Startling transformation in Newcastle team ahead of Norwich City

The day of the Newcastle 6 Norwich 2 match seems an awful lot longer ago than the 11 months it actually is.

This Wednesday (28 September) sees the teams meet for the first time at St James Park since that bizarre eight goal thriller.

A few things have happened since then…

Going back to that day, it was Newcastle’s first league win of the season, full two months into the season.

Everything finally clicked with Wijnaldum scoring four, Moussa Sissoko carving the visitors apart at will, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a quality goal – with Ayoze Perez adding the other.

This is the team from that day:

Newcastle 6 Norwich 2 Sunday 18 October 2015

Team: Elliot, Janmaat, Coloccini, Mbemba, Dummett (Haidara 65), Colback, Tiote (Anita 46),  Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Perez, Mitrovic (Cisse 88)

Unused Subs: Woodman, de Jong, Lascelles, Thauvin

Moving forward to the present day and if Rafa Benitez keeps the same team that dominated Aston Villa for over an hour and threw away two points – remarkably there would be only one person starting on Wednesday who also started in that 6-2 game for Newcastle.

Yes, Paul Dummett is the last man standing. In comparison, five of the Norwich team who started against Newcastle last October, also started in the 3-1 win over Burton on Saturday.

Janmaat, Coloccini, Sissoko and Wijnaldum have all moved on.

Tiote is still trying to move on, whilst Elliot and Colback were injured on Saturday.

On the other hand Mitrovic, Tiote, Perez and Mbemba weren’t selected against Aston Villa.

Looking at the subs on duty that day 11 months ago, quite surprising as well to see only one of those players, Jamaal Lascelles, playing on Saturday at Villa Park. Anita was suspended, Cisse’s gone, Thauvin and de Jong out on loan, Haidara injured and Woodman not selected.

Making a grand total of only two players out of that 18 man squad who faced Norwich the last time at St James Park, who started against Villa.

Aston Villa 1 Newcastle 1 Saturday 24 September 2016

Team: Sels, Yedlin (Tiote 75), Clark, Lascelles, Dummett, Gouffran, Hayden, Shelvey, Ritchie, Diame, Gayle

Unused Subs: Darlow, Lazaar, Hanley, Atsu, Perez
