End of transfer window signing Christian Atsu has revealed that he turned down offers from clubs in La Liga and Ligue 1 in order to come to Newcastle and work under Rafa Benitez.

The Ghanaian international made his debut as a sub on Tuesday night, making a first goal of the season for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The 24 year old Chelsea winger arrived on loan for the season, with Rafa Benitez having the option to make the move permanent if it works out this season.

Christian Atsu believes that a move to Tyneside was the correct move at this stage of his career, with the size of club and Rafa’s talents being key factors in his decision.

The player says that his family and friends also backed his decision to head to the north east.

Atsu will be hoping that the rotation policy turns his way tomorrow and allows him to make his first start for Newcastle and first appearance in black and white at St James Park, in front of what will be a 52,000+ full house.

Christian Atsu speaking to BBC Radio:

“I had clubs from Spain and also from France but I decided to come to Newcastle United.

“It was my option and I’m very happy that I made this decision.

Newcastle is a big club and for my development, with the coach (Rafa Benitez), I think is the best option for me.

“I spoke with my family and friends and they also gave me the green light.”
