What Norwich fans have had to say about the 4-3 thriller…
What a game, the match enters the fifth minute of injury time and Newcastle trail 3-2, but what did Norwich fans make of what happened next…?
As always really interesting to hear what the opposition view is.
Considering that after 94 minutes they were going back to the top of the league after only one defeat in 10 games, quite surprised at the vitriol towards Manager Alex Neil.
The consensus regarding what happened at St James Park, is that negative tactics/substitutions handed the game to Newcastle.
Comments from top Norwich fans forum The Pink Un:
‘6 bloody minutes???’
‘I’m having a horrible time listening to this.’
‘That, unfortunately, is worth more than just three points to Newcastle.’
‘Newcastle were confident they could outscore us, & they were right.
Their approach was almost Lambertesque. It came within a gnat’s of failing for them. Imagine their reaction if there’d not been those last 2 minutes of extra time? The toon would be in meltdown.’
‘Can’t help but feel that this result has been coming. For the most part, our game management when defending leads has been really sloppy this season – fortunately clubs of lesser quality haven’t managed to capitalise… but Newcastle…
We’d be 7 points clear of them now if we’d closed out that final minute – really disappointing and embarrassing way to lose and this must give Newcastle a huge lift for the coming fixtures.
Let’s hope the players can bounce back on the weekend, can’t say I’m too confident of that now though.’
‘I wish Alex f***ing Neil would learn something, specifically that the best way to alleviate pressure on the defence is to keep possession of the ball and to have an attacking outlet.
That means playing Wes and not taking off your only counter attacking outlet with 15 minutes left and surrendering all the impetus to Newcastle.’
‘The simple fact tonight is that we were outplayed. For all but 10 minutes in the second half Newcastle were all over us. Wes wouldn’t have got a kick.
Defensively we were all over the place from the first minute and eventually the pressure told, despite us scoring 3 times. Gayle should have scored 6 on his own.’
‘Stuck £15 on Newcastle to win 4-3 after their second goal went in. We’re just so predictable, I knew as soon as that went in our arses would fall out of our trousers yet again and we’d throw the game away.
Got a nice little bonus but I’m still pi**ed off.
I’m not gloating either, just trying to drive home how utterly predictable that result was.’
‘I consider that Neil’s mismanagement of the last quarter encapsulates all the reasons why there are constant doubts about him, why the ‘give him ten games sentiment’ arose and why despite flirting with the top place many of us still worry that the wheels could come off at any time.
Tonight shouldn’t have happened. Our manager virtually invited a Newcastle come back.’
‘The worst thing about tonight’s result is the massive lift and belief it gives Newcastle.
This could be the result/game that ensures there will only be one automatic promotion place up for grabs.’
‘Nothing else to say. Heartbroken.’
‘At least we’ve got this game at SJP out of the way early on in the season. We’re still second and the season is f****** long. I just hope this doesn’t put a stop to our decent form of late.’
‘The second they scored straight after we made it 3-1 was the moment we lost that game. That got the crowd up. If we had of been sensible and kept them quiet for 5 minutes we would have won that game.
Still didn’t expect us to lose it at 90+5.’
‘To basically tell Newcastle that we were just going to defend with 15 minutes of the game to go is ridiculous. He (Alex Neil) brought this on himself.’
‘Defensively just not good enough, I’d rather Newcastle had just won 1-0 and we write it off as a bad day, but this is beyond poor, letting a game slip like that is just unacceptable.
I cannot conceive how we go forward when the same mistakes are made time and time again. Devastated.’
‘Real shame we didn’t land Gayle last summer. That was a real kick in the nuts.’
‘Defeat grasped from the jaws of victory.
Can’t believe that one.’
‘Where the f*** does the ref find 7+ mins of injury time.’
‘We have a kick off in the 95th minute. How can we concede from that…’
‘Can’t believe it, what has just happened?’
Matt Ritchie 10 million
Jonjo Shelvey 12 million
Dwight Gayle 10 million
Alexander Mitrovic 15 million
Martin Olsson 2.5 million
Sebastian Bassong 3 million
Russell Martin 250k
Ivo Pinto 2.2 million.
Over 40k supporters at St James’ park tonight.
We switched off at the back and it cost us. Keep the faith and never mind the danger!’
‘We were extremely fortunate to be in the game at half time and in fairness the game should have been over.
IMO there’s maybe 4/5 teams that are as good as us, and we’ve only played two of them, Wednesday and Newcastle.’
‘Newcastle are the best squad we’ll face this season and we narrowly lost in a game we should have won. We’re still going up.’
‘To be fair Newcastle were the best team and we could have easily lost that 8-3 last night. They have a solid squad and good manager.’
