A game of changing fortunes on Monday night ended Serbia 2 Ireland 2.
Aleksandar Mitrovic lined up for the home team and before kick-off, asked the Serbian footballing public to show their support for the team despite an embarrassing Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.
Mitrovic saying pre-match:
“I appeal to the fans that despite everything that happened in the past, come to the stadium and give us your support.
“We will fight to the last atom of our strength – we need a strong boost.
“Give us this wind, we will not disappoint you, I believe in it.”
After kick-off though it was Ireland with the wind in their sails, midfielder Jeff Hendrick scoring after only three minutes to rock the home team.
Despite their overwhelming share of possession (70% v 30%) Serbia struggled for a route back into the game and Aleksandar Mitrovic was subbed after an hour.
Only a couple of minutes later Serbia were level through Kostic and in the 69th minute the home country took the lead via a Tadic penalty.
With Mitrovic watching on, new Newcastle teammate Daryl Murphy replaced goalscorer Jeff Hendrick, then four minutes later he headed the equaliser from a cross by Robbie Brady.
Interesting to see how Rafa Benitez uses these two strikers for Newcastle but it was a case of honours even for the pair tonight, although having grabbed the goal it was a personal moral victory for Daryl Murphy.
