James Perch “I have got nothing but love for Newcastle”

James Perch can’t wait for the chance to face Newcastle United.

The QPR versatile defender/midfielder a perfect example of a player who went from zero to cult hero at St James Park.

Perch really won the supporters around in the course of three years and 81 appearances, with maybe the highlight being when he put United one up at Old Trafford on Boxing Day 2013.

In typical Newcastle style though, despite leading 3-2 with 20 minutes to go, they still contrived to lose the game.

Only making 13 appearances (nine of them starts) in his first season as Newcastle tried to stabilise after promotion in 2009, it is maybe surprising that James Perch made as many as 25 appearances (13 starts) in the (2011/12) season when United finished fifth.

We are currently seeing Yoan Gouffran making a comeback after being totally written off and James Perch says that having won the supporters over, he has got ‘nothing but love’ for Newcastle United and the fans.

James Perch speaking to Get West London:

“I wasn’t popular there (Newcastle) at the start, but I managed to turn it around and I have got nothing but love for Newcastle the way they treated me and took to me.

“I had some really good times, really good games, so they are good memories.

Teams like Newcastle and Villa have come down with that pressure of needing to go straight back up.

“With the squad Newcastle have got, the resources the manager and the fan base they are definitely the favourites.

“So the rest of the teams in the Championship now can go under the radar a little bit and keep all the pressure on those boys.

“At the same time we will hopefully be picking up points every week and before you know it be up there as well.”
