Emmanuel Riviere debut at Real Madrid could have gone a little better…
After only one league goal in two seasons and totally frozen out of the Newcastle first team picture, what better place than the Bernabeu for Emmanuel Riviere to begin to rebuild his career.
Promoted Osasuna were desperate to add extra fire power, but on a budget, with the Newcastle striker brought in on loan for the season.
Starting up front at 3pm on Saturday afternoon before Newcastle’s kick-off with Derby County, Emmanuel Riviere stepped out to face Real Madrid in front of 69,567 spectators.
Within six minutes Ronaldo brought Riviere back to reality, opening the scoring and making it look a long afternoon ahead for the visitors.
Further strikes by Danilo and Ramos made it 3-0 to Real Madrid at the break, with Pepe adding a fourth in the 56th minute.
Five minutes later Emmanuel Riviere was dragged off and seconds later Modric made it 5-0, with at least half an hour (including injury time) remaining it looked as though total embarrassment lay in wait for Osasuna.
However, remarkably they then made a game of it, Riviere’s replacement, Oriol Riera, pulled a goal back only three minutes after coming on for the Newcastle forward.
Then with 12 minutes remaining, David Garcia restored an extra little bit of respectability to give a final scoreline of Real Madrid 5 Osasuna 2.
A rude awakening for the striker to life in La Liga but of course you don’t have to play Real Madrid (top with 3 wins in 3) every week.
Hopefully Emmanuel Riviere can make a success of his year in Spain and get a permanent move either there, or elsewhere.
