Ciaran Clark says he jumped at chance to move to ‘bigger’ club than Aston Villa
It will be interesting to see if Rafa Benitez includes Ciaran Clark in his team on Saturday teatime.
After Lascelles & Mbemba had crumbled surprisingly against Wolves in the 2-0 Championship defeat, Clark was arguably Newcastle’s best defender as he partnered Grant Hanley to a clean sheet in the rematch on Tuesday night in the EFL Cup.
Meeting up with our friends from Aston Villa was always going to be a feisty affair anyway, certainly off the pitch.
However, Ciaran Clark has added an extra bit of spice to the occasion.
The defender says that as soon as he was told that Newcastle United had met his buyout clause, he couldn’t get away from Villa quick enough to join NUFC.
Clark adding that the chance to join a much ‘bigger’ club was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse.
Exactly what makes a ‘big/bigger’ club is open to interpretation but little doubt that Villa fans won’t be laughing at their former player’s comments…
Ciaran Clark:
“As soon as I found out that the buyout clause had been met, straight away I wanted to get up the road and come and see what the place was about then got things sorted.
“Thankfully they did, and I am fully settled in now and ready to go.
“It was a mixture of all things: the manager, size of the club and the signings we’d already made.
“As a club, you can’t get any bigger.
“The signings we’d made showed we were going to have a good go this year.”
