What Aston Villa fans have said about 1-1 draw with Newcastle

A lot was said by both Newcastle and Aston Villa fans in the lead up to Saturday’s match.

Did the 1-1 draw allow both sets of supporters to come away with dignity intact…?

Newcastle bossed the first half and could/should have had the game won by half-time.

The home side finished the stronger and had a penalty appeal, a disallowed goal, woodwork hit and an equaliser.

So what did the Aston Villa fans make of it all?

Here are a range of views taken from top Aston Villa fans message boards Villa Talk and Heroes & Villains:

Before/during the match:

‘I came out at half time cuz I just couldn’t face any more, SHAME ON ME.’

‘Be robbery if we get anything from this.’

‘This ref has been absolutely determined to give them everything.

As if we aren’t handicapped enough by the weird looking creature in the manager’s dug-out and generally just being a bit sh*t.’

‘One more chance I reckon

Would be a steal as we’ve only played for 20 mins

But it has been better.’

‘Have that you geordie bastards!!’

‘I had to wait a few moments before celebrating that. I simply can’t believe we’ve got one.’

‘Well, on that showing we’re miles better than “run away with the title” Newcastle.

Even when we were rubbish in the first half, they weren’t really any better.’

‘So glad, and a little stunned, that we got something from that game. A bizarre game that should have seen Newcastle home and dry.’

‘Lucky. Dreadful performance. Newcastle should have been out of sight.

Ah well.’

‘Only one team was going to win that at the end though.  First half was terrible, last 30 mins of Villa pressure excellent. I never expected us to go straight back up but I do think we’re not far from gelling. And the other major plus point tonight – we didn’t lose to The Loudmouth Geordies.’

‘Newcastle have already gone and won at Bristol and Derby, we haven’t.

They could easily have been 3 up tonight.

I’d be amazed if we finish above them this season, we need to improve and quick.’

‘Newcastle did what we’ve been doing, dominating, wasting chances and then yielding the initiative to the opposition with 20-25 minutes to go.  Kind of the opposite of the Huddersfield game.  Positive to get a draw but worrying signs are continued poor defending, gifting goals, frequently non existent midfield and not having much luck in front of goal.’

‘As bad as can be in the first half. Some hope from the second half and nice to score the late goal for a change. However if we want to be serious about promotion  a draw at home against Newcastle is a bad result.’

‘Toon really should have been out of sight, but as we know, if you don’t take you chances you don’t win games.’

‘The tw*ts should have been out of site at half time but at least we showed some balls in the last twenty mins.’

‘Watched it in a pub in ashington.

Bastards embarrassed me yet one more time. When’s it gonna stop? Heroic draws at home, losses away, that’s relegation form. I wouldn’t be unhappy for the owner to pull the trigger.’

‘Sometimes i think its like rock, paper, scissors you set your team up trying to predict what the other team will do and they do the opposite. The first half yesterday was the first time this season a team has come to VP and had a real go at us. RDM changed our formation at half time and got it spot on.’

‘Apparently we celebrated the equaliser like we’d won a cup, although I’m not sure how Newcastle supporters would know what that kind of celebration looked like.’

‘We drew that because they (Newcastle) do what we do. Panic when winning with 20/25 to go.’

‘Not sure about the pen but Shelvey should definitely have been sent off. Officials  definitely had a soft spot for the Geordies.’

‘Just before the equaliser I said if it was us defending a 1-0 lead you would feel a goal coming. Newcastle were exactly the same, falling deeper and deeper and the panic throughout their team was almost tangible in the stands.’

‘Suddenly everyone looked more confident on and off the ball. In the end Newcastle the team that will ‘walk’ this league, were hanging on. I’m hoping this will give the team the confidence for the next two away games.’

‘I hate jawdees.’

‘70 minutes of utter sh*te, and some baffling decisions by RDM, I think that goal will paper over the cracks to some extent, but this wasn’t a good performance at all. Newcastle should have been 3-4 ahead, we were lucky that their finishing was dreadful.’

‘Newcastle should have won that easily, but they squandered so many chances in the first half. Nice to get a point, but I still don’t know what RDM’s trying with these line-ups.’

‘You have to say Newcastle completely Villa’d that up.’

‘I defended the 3-5-2 pregame. I was wrong. They were a class above first half.

Much better 2nd half but not enough to feel the 1-1 was a fair result. Tish was immense. The last 15 minutes was awesome.’

‘We have some good players. We don’t have a good manager.

Newcastle are a better side than us.’

‘Newcastle are the best team we will play all season and we were all over them in the second half. The other teams in this division are merely cannon fodder and we need to treat them as such.’

‘We really really deserved to be losing beyond hope at half time – could have been 0-4 easily. Fortunately, Newcastle were complacent and clueless with the many simple chances they got.’

‘Newcastle are the best team in the champ and they should have been 3/4 up in first half but we deserved a point in the end and it was great for the team to finally should a bit of character to come back it could be the turning point in our season .’
