Dwight Gayle explains Rafa Benitez tactics and talks us through the goal

After making it four goals in eight days, Dwight Gayle says ‘I’m buzzing at the moment’.

The striker says that Rafa’s tactics worked to perfection as Newcastle made a quick counter-attack, with Mohamed Diame’s brilliant ball equalled by Gayle’s finish.

The goal was Newcastle’s only shot on target and at times they were forced to defend for long spells, with Dwight Gayle saying that these are the games you usually remember, when team spirit takes you through rather than the games you dominate.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic now free from suspension and ongoing claims of another striker set to be signed before the transfer window closes, interesting to see how Rafa Benitez sets his team up .

One thing for sure, Dwight Gayle has reinforced the fact that he can knock the goals in at this level and with natural goalscorers such as him, no reason why he can’t do it if getting his chance in the Premier League again…

Dwight Gayle speaking to NUFC TV:

“After the game the boys come into the dressing room and you can see what it means for everyone, all buzzing and we all know what an important three points it is when perhaps you haven’t played your best – but we dug in and the defence was excellent today.

“Obviously there are going to be games when you play fantastic and you win two or three nil but these are the results you really remember – because you grind it out in a performance when you maybe don’t play too good – but you worked hard and stuck together.”

‘Your goal – sign of a player full of confidence?’

“I’m buzzing at the moment, it’s nice to be scoring and helping out the team.”

‘Momentum starting to build?’

“I hope so. Obviously the first two results didn’t go our way and Reading was a well needed win, so hopefully we can push on.”

‘Talk us through the goal.’

“This is the way we were looking to set up, trying to wait for them to make a mistake and we did that, then we counter-attacked well.

Mo (Diame) picked the ball up in midfield, played a great ball over the top and luckily I finished it (watch the goal HERE) for the team. From then on we just defended well and got the three points.

“You are going to get chances during the game that maybe don’t go your way and the main thing is just to keep on going because there is going to be another one just around the corner.”
