Ayoze Perez ‘Even though we are in the Championship the fans are still behind us’
Ayoze Perez felt it was good to give a little back, as Newcastle fans enjoyed the chance to attend the free open day and watch the first team squad train at St James Park.
Most importantly for the Spaniard who turned 23 a week ago, is the fact that the supporters have stuck by the team despite the drop into the Championship.
Remarkably, the club announced that they had sold more season tickets this summer compared to the same point 12 months ago, with belief in Rafa Benitez and relief that things are at last being done properly at the club, far outweighing any change of divisions.
Ayoze Perez thinks that the players are ready and is looking forward to kicking off the season on Friday at Craven Cottage.
In the friendlies, Ayoze Perez looks to have thrived with three excellent goals to make him top scorer in pre-season, the goals having been shared around 14 different players.
In the absence of players such as Wijnaldum and Sissoko, Perez has been allowed to play a more pivotal/central role in the friendlies and having a mobile striker like Gayle in front of him (rather than Mitrovic), could give the former Tenerife player more space to work in.
Ayoze Perez speaking to the Newcastle United website:
“It was really nice to train in front of the fans. It was a different day but we all enjoyed it and we were all together, so a nice day.
“I think for the fans it must be something really nice and for the kids too.
“I think it’s a good thing for the Club and we can see that even though we are in the Championship, the fans are still behind us.
“We need that support after last year, which wasn’t the best one, but we need the support and to have the fans with us…and they are – they definitely are. It’s going to be an interesting season.
“We have felt really good all the way through pre-season and the important thing now is the season.
“We think we are ready and we are looking forward to starting now.”
