Watford deny Newcastle £7m offer for key player

With Newcastle United in the market for defenders, it was claimed that NUFC had made a £7m offer for Craig Cathcart.

Watford picked up the (now) 27 year old from Blackpool on a free two years ago and he has been first choice for these past two seasons.

After losing Fabricio Coloccini, it means Newcastle have left three centre-backs go in the past six months, with Steven Taylor released and Mike Williamson sold to Wolves.

However, the Watford Observer claim that their information from the club (Watford) is that no offer has as yet been received from Newcastle – and even if a bid does to come in, the Premier League outfit wouldn’t entertain it.

Craig Cathcart was third in the Watford player of the year voting for last season and has just helped Northern Ireland reach the knockout stages of the European Championships.

Whilst 31 year old Jesus Gamez is set to be Newcastle’s next signing, the smart money is surely on the next one being a British centre-back, though guessing the identity is another thing.

Thursday morning saw claimed Newcastle interest in Aden Flint, the Bristol City centre-back standing at over 6ft 5 and having scored 20 league goals over teh course of the past two seasons.
