It is starting to get interesting…

Jesus Gamez has made it four signings for Rafa Benitez and the quartet will all have the benefit of a month’s pre-season with the rest of the Newcastle squad.

Whilst Rafa Benitez has made clear he is under no pressure to sell anybody, you can’t help but think that all four new signings haven’t come to sit on the bench.

Matt Ritchie is giving up regular Premier League football, whilst Gayle and Gamez are forfeiting irregular top division football in England and Spain respectively, surely with the expectation of featuring in the first team.

Likewise Matz Sels, with Champions League football last season and Premier League clubs having shown an interest, you can’t kid yourself he picked Newcastle unless he is going to actually play.

With a much changed starting eleven looking now a certainty, we just await to see where Rafa Benitez sees the rest of the current squad fitting into his plans.

If any of the higher paid supposedly Premier League players don’t fit into his first team picture this coming season, then you can hardly see that changing if United bounce straight back to the top division in 12 months time.

With the comfort of knowing he doesn’t have to sell, the great thing is that Rafa Benitez holds all the aces.

There won’t be any clubs able to take liberties and pick up bargains, if players want to leave and have clubs interested, they will have to do business on Rafa’s terms.

So if other clubs want to trade and it then helps Rafa Benitez to further remodel the squad then great.

Equally, if Newcastle end up stuck with players such as Wijanldum, Sissoko, Shelvey and whoever, then so be it.

The only show in town is promotion and Rafa Benitez has been given the freedom to make that happens – nothing is going to be allowed to interfere with the restoration of Newcastle United at the top table and the manager’s reputation remaining intact.
