Southend 0 Newcastle 2 : Classy strikes from Anita and Gouffran – Watch them here

Southend 0 Newcastle 2

The first half was a disappointing affair as Newcastle struggled to make progress against a League One side featuring a number of trialists.

Jonjo Shelvey brought out an excellent save from the home keeper but apart from that, there were only a couple of decent opportunities that Ayoze Perez worked for himself but he couldn’t add the finish.

However, only a couple of minutes into the second half that all changed, Vurnon Anita finding himself in an advanced position and in space, trying a rare shot that was a goal (watch it below) from the moment it left his right boot. The keeper left grasping thin air.

That seemed to settle the visitors and as they relaxed they played better football, although the usual multiple substitutions were always going to disrupt that flow.

Then with just over 10 minutes left, Gouffran worked himself an opening towards the left, just inside the penalty area, producing a very good finish that went across the goalkeeper and nestled in the far left bottom corner.

Karl Darlow was given the whole 90 minutes after Matz Sels had previously dominated in the friendlies, not having an awful lot to do but producing an excellent late save to preserve his clean sheet.

Another job done and with three wins and a draw, 14 goals and three clean sheets, Rafa Benitez must be fairly happy with has pre-season has gone.

Although you never know until it gets all competitive – with only nine days remaining until Fulham.

Newcastle United:

Darlow, Janmaat (Sterry 63), Mbemba (Hanley 63), Lascelles, Dummett, Hayden (Colback 63), Anita (Thauvin 79), Aarons (Gouffran 63), Shelvey (Saivet 73), Gayle (Armstrong 63), Perez (Mitrovic 73),
